Anchor Rod

The anchor rod or anchor rode is a vital accessory in any anchoring system, making the vessel literally fastened to the anchor and able to moor securely. Materials used to make the rode can be rope, chain, or a combination of the two, with each type having its advantages: rope is fairly light and extremely easy to handle; chain has far greater strength and resistance to abrasion under rough conditions. The length of the rode is considered vital to permit the anchor to set at an angle to better holding power, from seven to ten times the water depth, generally. The choice of rope, chain, or combination depends on the size of the vessel and surroundings; usually, larger vessels and offshore installations resort to heavy-duty steel chains for endurance.
