- The official end date of PM Surya Ghar is 31 March 2027, the end of the scheme's implementation period.
- The portal does not show a separate, earlier last date for applications, so 31 March 2027 is also the effective last date to apply.
- A three-to-four-month extension has been reported as under consideration, but nothing has been notified as of October 2026.
- Applying is not enough: installation, net metering and inspection must also be completed, so do not plan to start in March 2027.
- Missing the deadline can cost a 3 kW household up to ₹78,000 in central subsidy, and up to ₹1,08,000 in states like Uttar Pradesh that add their own top-up.
What Is the Official PM Surya Ghar Last Date?
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was launched in February 2024 with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore and a target of rooftop solar for 1 crore households. The scheme's funding and implementation period runs until 31 March 2027, the end of financial year 2026-27, and the national portal shows this as the closing date.
There is no separate, earlier cut-off for applications. In practice, though, the date that matters is not when you apply but when your system is installed, net-metered and inspected, because the subsidy is released only after commissioning is verified.
Extension: What Is Confirmed and What Is Only Reported
| Point | Status (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Scheme end date of 31 March 2027 | Official, as per MNRE guidelines and the portal |
| Three-to-four-month extension beyond March 2027 | Reported as under consideration; not notified |
| A successor or next-phase rooftop scheme | Consultations reported; nothing announced |
| What happens to applications unfinished on 31 March 2027 | No official notice yet |
| Change in subsidy amounts before the end date | None announced |
Status based on publicly available information as of October 2026. Always check pmsuryaghar.gov.in and MNRE notifications for the latest position.
If an extension does come, industry commentators expect it to help applications already in the pipeline finish, rather than to open a long new window. The safe approach is to plan to 31 March 2027 until a notification says otherwise.
State Top-Up Subsidies: Extra Money at Stake
The ₹78,000 central subsidy is the same across India, but several states add their own top-up on top of it. In those states, missing the deadline can cost more than the central amount alone, because state support is usually linked to the same scheme process and to the state's own policy period.
| State | Reported state top-up (residential) | Verify with |
|---|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh | ₹15,000 per kW, maximum ₹30,000 per consumer (total up to ₹1,08,000 with central subsidy) | UPNEDA |
| Delhi | State capital subsidy plus a generation-based incentive (GBI) per unit; amounts reported differ between sources | Delhi government solar portal / your DISCOM |
| Haryana | Targeted support, mainly for lower-income (Antyodaya) families; amounts reported vary | HAREDA |
| Rajasthan | ₹17,000 for beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Nishulk Bijli Yojana | RRECL |
| Tamil Nadu | State top-up announced in August 2026 | TEDA |
| Bihar | Additional per-kW support reported | BREDA |
Compiled from publicly available state scheme summaries, 2026. State top-ups change often and many have extra eligibility conditions. Always confirm the current amount and terms with your state nodal agency before applying.
| System size (Uttar Pradesh) | Central subsidy | UP top-up | Total subsidy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | ₹15,000 | ₹45,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹90,000 |
| 3 kW and above | ₹78,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹1,08,000 |
UP top-up: ₹15,000/kW, capped at ₹30,000 per consumer, as per UPNEDA summaries.
Does the state top-up also end in March 2027?
Where the Scheme Stands in October 2026
The scheme had crossed about 51.7 lakh installations and 61.4 lakh households benefited by 9 October 2026, with about 90 lakh applications on the portal. The installation pace peaked at about 16,300 a day in July 2026.
To reach 1 crore by 31 March 2027, the scheme needs roughly 22,300 to 27,900 installations a day for the remaining months, which is 1.4 to 1.7 times its best pace so far. This gap is the main reason an extension is being discussed. For you, it means one thing: DISCOM queues and vendor schedules will get busier as March 2027 approaches.
Required-pace figures are Headsup B2B calculations. See our India Rooftop Solar Market 2026 research report for the full analysis.

A Working Calendar to Beat the Deadline
Every DISCOM moves at a different speed, so there is no fixed timeline. The calendar below works backwards from the deadline and keeps March 2027 as a safety buffer.
| Target by | What should be done |
|---|---|
| November 2026 | Portal registration complete; feasibility applied for or approved |
| December 2026 | Vendor finalised; installation date booked |
| January 2027 | System installed |
| February 2027 | Net meter installed; DISCOM inspection done; commissioning report uploaded |
| March 2027 | Buffer only — for delays in inspection or subsidy processing |
Suggested planning calendar by Headsup B2B, not an official schedule. Societies should start one to two months earlier.
Cost Calculation: What Missing the Deadline Costs You
| Illustrative cost model (approx., incl. GST) — 3 kW home, North India | Value |
|---|---|
| System cost (assumed) | ≈ ₹2,00,000 |
| Central subsidy if completed in time | − ₹78,000 |
| Net cost with subsidy | ≈ ₹1,22,000 |
| Annual generation (≈ 1,400 units/kW) | ≈ 4,200 units |
| Annual saving (at assumed ₹7/unit) | ≈ ₹29,400 |
| Payback with subsidy | ≈ 4.1 years |
| Payback without subsidy | ≈ 6.8 years |
| In Uttar Pradesh, central + state subsidy at stake | up to ₹1,08,000 |
| Cost of missing the deadline | ₹78,000 (₹1.08 lakh in UP) + longer payback |
Illustrative model with assumed system cost and tariff, October 2026. Actual cost varies by brand, state and site; tariffs vary by DISCOM. Some states also offer top-up subsidies that may follow different timelines. Not a quote.
Mistakes to Avoid Near the Deadline
- Treating 31 March 2027 as the date to apply, instead of the date by which everything must be finished.
- Waiting for an extension that has not been notified.
- Choosing an unregistered vendor or non-DCR modules to save time or money — the subsidy will be rejected.
- Not checking that bank details on the portal match your account, which delays the final credit.
- Assuming state top-ups follow the same deadline; check your state's own terms.
Choosing a Vendor Who Can Finish on Time
As the deadline gets closer, the vendor's capacity to deliver matters as much as price. Before you sign, check:
- Portal registration for your state and DISCOM.
- Stock of DCR modules and inverters, with delivery dates in writing.
- Current installation backlog — ask when they can actually install.
- Net-meter and inspection support included in the quote.
- Itemised quote covering equipment, structure, cabling, labour and GST.

Will the subsidy amount change before the deadline?+
No change has been announced. The subsidy remains ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW, up to ₹78,000.
Does the deadline apply to housing societies too?+
Yes. GHS and RWA applications follow the same end date, and they usually take longer, so societies should start earlier.
Do states give extra subsidy on top of PM Surya Ghar?+
Several do. Uttar Pradesh adds ₹15,000 per kW up to ₹30,000, taking the total for a 3 kW home to ₹1,08,000. Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Bihar also offer some form of state support, often with extra conditions.
Will the state subsidy also end in March 2027?+
It depends on your state's policy. UP's top-up is paid under its Solar Energy Policy 2022, which runs through 2026-27. Check with your state nodal agency.
Can I still install solar after March 2027 without subsidy?+
Yes. Rooftop solar remains possible and can still pay back over time, but without the central subsidy the payback period is longer.
